Project Description
I’ve studied Velazquez extensively, and used his working methods in this painting. The canvas is prepared with a mixture of lead white and charcoal gray oil paint. I used 17thC opaque pigments such as lead-tin yellow, vermilion, smalt, and transparent pigments such as French ultramarine, manganese oxide and organic red lake. To get the effects of the rays of divine light, and clouds. I experimented with the use of calcite.
