The mystery and the beauty of this patio in Spain moved me to paint The Court of Myrtles (Patio de Arrayanes). It had been set aside for the Sultan’s harem, whose living quarters were above. Wood screens covered their windows so they could see out without being seen, and they rarely ventured out of their room or garden.
